The Christian & Missionary Alliance in Canada: A Brief History

The Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada, now that’s a mouthful! To most though, we are simply known as the “Alliance”. We are Christian because we believe and trust in Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord. We are missionary because we believe it is important to share this truth with others around the globe who may not have heard of Jesus.

The Alliance has its roots in the Presbyterian church. In the 1870’s, Albert Benjamin Simpson, a minister at a prestigious Presbyterian church in New York City felt a strong burden to share his love of Jesus Christ with the poor and neglected both at home and abroad. Through his impassioned preaching he inspired many people from a variety of churches to join him in accomplishing his vision and led to the foundation of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church. Today, the Alliance Church can be found throughout the world with 451 Alliance Churches across Canada.

Georgetown Alliance Church: A brief history

On Sunday, October 2, 1966 the Georgetown Alliance Church was born! On that Sunday, the Georgetown Alliance Church held its first service in the Cedarvale Community Centre in Cedarvale Park. There was no organ, no choir, and no pews for that matter. On that first Sunday there were two families in attendance, and a young, vibrant pastor, Rev. Paul Collins who had a vision to proclaim God’s Word and impact the community of Georgetown with the love of Jesus Christ.

Over the years some things about GAC have changed. The church has grown steadily from a handful of people in its beginnings, to approximately 1000 people who think of Georgetown Alliance Church as their church home today, almost half of them age nineteen or under.

GAC has always been blessed with strong leadership through the years. Four dedicated men have served the church as senior pastor, our current senior pastor Dr. Paul Little having been at the helm since 1988.

While some things have changed, one thing has remained constant during GAC’s history – a passion for Jesus Christ, and a desire to share His love with the surrounding communities. Jesus Christ has been and is still the centre of all that we do as a church, and we look forward to the years ahead where Jesus will continue to draw many more people into the family of Georgetown Alliance Church.
